Green roofs maintenance

Various factors influence the quality and life expectancy of a green roof. For example, the incorrect choice of certain components may result in more dominant plant types taking over and the simple “degeneration” back to natural plant growth.
The design and maintenance consequently require the necessary attention:

Regarding the design, account must be taken of the following factors:

  • the correct choice of the substrate: an incorrectly or poorly composed substrate increases the likelihood of the development of unwanted vegetation.
  • the correct definition of the water retention capacity in relation to the vegetation
  • the correct execution of roofing details: this reduces the risk of any damage to these details as a result of (unwanted) plant growth.

Immediately after planting the roof landscaping the vegetation must be sprayed sufficiently.
Extensive green roofs will then not be sprayed again, intensive one will be.

All types of green roofs require maintenance. Unlike other types, extensive green roofs require very little maintenance. This does not mean no maintenance is required at all. In its first year, extensive landscaping should preferably be inspected every three months. Thereafter one inspection per year is sufficient.
The following points are included under the inspection :

  • removing parasitic plants by the root
  • sowing bare areas striking cuttings
  • checking erosion formation in the substrate
  • removing general pollution, including heaps of dead leaves
  • putting plant mats that have shifted position back in place
  • checking all roof details

In the spring, extensive green roofs may be fertilised using organic fertilizer. Inrtensive green roofs, however, require the same level of maintenance as a normal garden.
