What's a green roof?
The aim of a roof is to protect the building from the effect of the weather, especially the humidity.
On a green roof, the coverage mainly consists of living plants, it’s name doesn’t actually refers to the color. Besides the plants, for the structual building of a green roof adapted materials , such as substrate, drainage layer, ...- are used.
Finally, there is no difference between green roof from natural origin and man-made green roofs. Green roof with a natural origin are only fully developed after 10 to 20 years. Unlike landscaped green roofs who can reach maturity in a short period of time.
That’s the reason why we limit ourselves to these types.
So the theory that all green roofs are roof gardens is consequently not true. On the other hand, the following reasoning is true : all roof gardens are green roofs. The term ‘roof garden’ is defined as a green roof with the characteristics of a garden, but on a roof.
